HIAKAI is a 30 seat restaurant open for dinner from 5:00pm Thursday to Saturday.

Our menu is not just an exploration of indigenous and local ingredients, our menu explores well known Māori myths, legends and contemporary stories. Each time our menu changes, the story changes, so no two menus are ever the same. Our aim is to engage our guests in not just the food of Aotearoa but also into the history and culture of our land that makes us so unique.

HIAKAI offers a seven course menu experience. HIAKAI offers a set menu for a variety of reasons. We want our offerings to be fresh, seasonal, and thoughtful, and we hate to waste good kai. A set menu allows us to do all of these things, and alongside our beverage programme, is a dynamic and reflective expression of what we value, and what we share.

We look forward to your visit

RESERVATION FAQs

BOOKINGS

Dinner is by reservation only, and we do not accept walk ins. We release our bookings semi-seasonally, and at present are taking bookings through to the end of APRIL 2021. For information about other dates, please contact us at info@hiakai.co.nz

As part of your booking, you will be asked to provide credit card information. This will be stored securely, and in the event of a breach of our booking policy we reserve the right to charge this card for the total amount indicated on your booking. Our reservation policy is fully explained during the booking process.

With less than 72 hours notice, a cancellation fee may apply. If applied, this cancellation fee will be for the total cost of the experiences booked, not including beverage matches. If you need to cancel your reservation, you may do so by following the link in the confirmation email you receive, or by emailing info@hiakai.co.nz

We recommend making your booking eight weeks in advance of your preferred dining date to avoid disappointment.

Beverage matches

HIAKAI offers two options for beverage matching - an alcoholic option consisting of wine, beer, and mixed drinks, and a non-alcoholic option which includes fermented sodas, juices, drinking shrubs, and more. Our booking portal organises these matches as ‘supplements’ - these are charged at a per-head price. Please select the total number of matches that your table will require.

We also have a small and carefully curated beverage menu that offers by the glass or bottle options for guests wishing to order à la carte.

The Chef Counter

The Chef’s counter is our most interactive and exciting experience, and as such seating is at a premium. We have four seats available at the counter per night. We prepare, plate, and present the entirety of our menu directly in front of the guests. Please keep in mind that the counter seating is on bar stools, and that conversation for groups of more than two may be hampered by this.

Dietary Requirements

Each HIAKAI menu is based upon well known Māori myths, legends and contemporary stories. As such, we try to make as few changes to the menu as possible so that guests can enjoy the menu as Chef Monique Fiso envisioned it. This means that we are not able to make substitutions for aversions as this will compromise the integrity of the experience.

For vegetarian, pescetarian, and guests with sensitivities to lactose or gluten, please ensure to note these requirements when making your booking. We require at least 48 hours prior notice to accommodate these restrictions. If we are not informed 48 hours prior to your reservation, we may not be able to cater to your dietary request. Unfortunately, at this time, we do not accommodate vegan requirements.

For all other dietary requirements and if you have any further questions regarding our dietary requirements policy, please email info@hiakai.co.nz or call +64-4-9387360 before making your booking so we can discuss the necessary arrangements.

Location & Parking

We are located at 40 Wallace Street, Mt Cook, Wellington. We do not have onsite parking and we encourage our guests to arrive and depart via taxi or Uber. However, there is limited paid parking conveniently located across the street at Massey University.

Private events and larger bookings

HIAKAI is available for private events outside of our normal opening days. These can be for lunches, dinners, or other occasions. Due to our size, the number of guests is limited to 35. For standard dinner bookings groups exceeding four people, some arrangements can be made. For further information, please get in touch with us at info@hiakai.co.nz
